<itunes:summary>Hot on the heels of last month’s episode (AHTA #13 – The Highs and Lows of Beer Review: Part 1) we now bring you the thrilling conclusion.
Where the previous episode featured beers under 1% ABV, this one goes up to the opposite end of the ABV scale (well almost, we don’t get to the heady heights of Schorschbräu’s Bocks or BrewDog’s Tactical Nuclear Penguin) and features beers with an ABV over 10%.
Including beers from Brouwerij de Molen, Arbor Ales, Wild Beer Company and Mikkeller.

And you finally get the chance to find out the results from the Low ABV episode last month, so tune in and have fun.
And seeing as we still didn’t have any photos from the night:

Neither is it a post looking at the “this beer is the best thing I’ve ever tasted” ales compared with the “why exactly did they bother brewing this” duds that we’ve tasted over the years.
Instead, in a first for All Hail the Ale, we bring you our first two part episode where we look at low ABV and high ABV beers separately.
The arbitrary rule we set ourselves was under 1% and over 10%, and all beers had to be standard fermented beers as opposed to all that distilled malarkey.

First up is the low ABV episode which includes beers from Erdinger, Bavaria and Brewdog. As we like to encourage suspense, you’ll have to tune in next month to find out who we voted as the top low beer!
Also, this month we welcome a new special guest in the shape of David Brown who brings his own wit and charm to the proceedings (and kindly donated his dining room to record the podcast, what a chap eh?).
Finally, we totally forgot to take any pictures, so we can’t show you what the beers we had looked like, instead here’s a Picard facepalm to show you how we all feel.

<itunes:summary>While last month’s episode (AHTA #8) was the first release of the year, this is the first podcast recorded in 2013.
The selection of ales received from Badger Ales
In September last year we brought you reviews of a number of ales from Grain Brewery in AHTA #7, and very pleased with them we were too!
Around the same time we were sent the Grain beers, we also received a selection of beers from Badger Ales, and we finally bring you our showcase.

I don’t really know what we were expecting prior to receiving beers from breweries for the sole purpose of us reviewing them for our listeners pleasure (the things we put ourselves through for you…), but on both occasions we have been pleasantly surprised.
Any regular listeners will know of our disdain for the mass production of ‘craft ales’, and while Grain’s offerings certainly don’t fall into this category, the availability of Badger Ales in supermarkets across the country surely fits the description perfectly – so we had to try and put our feelings aside for this one!
Whilst researching Hall & Woodhouse (the brewery behind Badger Ales) prior to the show, we were surprised to learn of their rich history and standing as one of the oldest family owned breweries in the country. We sampled their ales with a renewed respect and, with the Fursty Ferret being a slight exception, all were generally well received. Consistency was the key theme, and I think the comments made by Ritchie and Mark about the Hopping Hare pretty much summed up their entire offerings: “well put together, well balanced beer”.
In addition to Badger, we also covered All Hail the Ale’s latest homebrew offering. Cooked in my kitchen to a Thornbridge Home Brew competition winner recipe from a few years ago and using ingredients bought from BrewUK, the podcast recording was the scene of the very first pint from the barrel.
We’ll bring you a new blog post about the process a little later, but for now, if you want to know how we rated the latest attempt, you’ll have to get downloading and listen to the new episode!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>So, here we are, it’s 2013 and we have the release of the first AHTA podcast of the year. We have a little secret to let you in on though, as this was originally recorded back in October 2012, but we had so many other things we wanted to get released before Christmas we held it back for this year.
So, the mystery is solved, well it wasn’t really a mystery, we told you all about it in our 2012 US Election Special which replaced this one.
This says it all, brewing from start to finish from Country Life Brewery
This month’s episode, sees us looking at beers from the Cornwall, Devon and Bristol area and is rather imaginatively titled “The English South West Special”.
I have to admit the actual reviewing night is a little hazy now, I’m writing this almost a quarter of a year later, and I’m usually lucky if I remember what happened 3 minutes ago, let alone 3 months. However, one thing I do remember is that the beers from Cornwall and Devon did not review very highly. This may not be indicative of the area, in fact we know it isn’t because we’ve reviewed some much better beers from these areas in the past, but as the Bristol area (including Bath) was reviewed last we definitely ended on a relative high note.
Arbor Ales and Bristol Beer Factory (both from Bristol) were a particular standout, while other breweries could be considered old-fashioned and stuck in their ways they obviously do something fresh that appeals to their fans in all the right ways!
The image at the top of the post is from Country Life Brewery’s website, which is the most amusing of the websites we took a look at, all of which are documented at length in the podcast. I actually like the image, which is animated on their site, but I just don’t think you’d see anything like it anywhere else…
In retrospect, we were a little harsh on the Devonshire and Cornish beers, which is bound to prompt many comments (hopefully), and we’re surely to be accused of some sort of elitism or snobbery. But hey, our taste buds are what they are, we like full-bodied, hoppy flavoured beers, and of the beers we tried, that wasn’t the case for much of Devon and Cornwall.
That aside, I think the South West has much more to offer, breweries such as Arbor Ales are obviously forging their way into the modern craft beer following, but one thing is clear; there is still a huge market for historic style, old-fashioned beers, such as those from Golden Hill and Clearwater Breweries which were also featured in this month’s episode.
Now, all that’s left is to remind you to please leave us a review on iTunes as it would really help us, or come and tell us directly at our Facebook and Twitter pages, or drop us a mail at podcast@allhailtheale.co.uk. We would very much like to read out your mails on our next podcast, but if you’re shy and would rather we didn’t please let us know.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The observant amongst you will have probably guessed by now, but just in case – yes, this is the second AHTA Christmas episode! Featuring festive ales, winter brews and some singing that is a tad better than our rendition of that anthemy thing from the US of A, this podcast gives you the lowdown on some of the many decent beers there are to help you cope with the long, dark nights and the terror of cooking for 8 people.

We decided this year not to focus on just Christmas beers (like last year…well, um, April), but to share with you some dark, wintry ales too. We had around 20 beers to choose from, but realising the negative impact this could have on our livers and speaking ability, we chose 6 for the show. Most of these beers – as well as the others which we’ll be enjoying during our respective festivities – were from the online site, Ales By Mail.
The evening had an extremely festive feeling – we had hats! Jumpers! Crackers! – and it got all of us in the mood for the 25th December. To top it all off, we’ve even managed to release it at the right time of the year, so please get yourself a copy of the podcast, and share in our festive joy!
… So grab yourself a copy of the podcast, settle down in front of the fire with a pint of your favourite beverage and share in our festive joy!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>AHTA made a pact with itself at the end of the last County Wars to never mistake the origin of a beer again. Did we manage to keep this pact?
There’s only one way to find out, download the latest podcast, available now in all the usual places.
This time around we bring you a pretty eclectic mix of types of beer, from an old-style White Stout from Durham Brewery to a New World NZPA from Hawkshead.

Results from the Second County Wars episode were as follows:

Position
County
Brewery
Ale
Rating

1
Cumbria
Hawkshead Brewery
NZPA
23

2
County Durham
Durham Brewery
White Stout
19.5

3
Greater Manchester
Marble Brewery
Tawny no.5
17.5

4
Staffordshire
Burton Bridge Brewery
Bramble Stout
13.5

5
Wiltshire
Hopback Brewery
Crop Circle
7.5

When you listen back you’ll hear that we were pretty unanimous about the Hawkshead New Zealand Pale Ale being crowned champion, as there was no doubting the quality of the beer.
Another first this month for All Hail the Ale. The podcast is in stereo. Finally you can listen to us bi-aurally, like it’s the 1990′s.
That said, you will also see that we have a new website and slightly updated design. Hope you like it…

Opinions were pretty much split on the ultimate winners, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide once an for all, but as you can se Germany and Sweden were our top two. There were certainly no Ronaldo’s used in the making of Portugal’s Super Bock, and if the Greek economy was based upon the quality of Mythos the withdrawal from the European currency would have been decided years ago. Honorable mentions have to go to Czech Republic’s Budvar Dark, as we have long been fans of the standard Budvar lager, and the Dark was a refreshing extension of the brand.

<itunes:summary>OK, so it isn’t, it’s April and Christmas was ages ago, but it is the perfect time to release the Christmas themed podcast recorded last year!
Rather strangely, in this podcast we review a number of Christmas beers from around the world, including Coventry’s very own XXXMas ale from Byatts brewery, the ale widely accepted to be the very first specially produced Christmas Ale, Gordon’s Christmas and the episode favourite from Belgian brewery Delirium.
We hope you enjoy and stay tuned next month for a Coventry Beer Festival themed podcast.
